Artists and cultural representatives from New Zealand, Mexico, and Senegal participated in the reopening, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the curation process.

The renovation places a greater emphasis on the artists and the cultural context of the works, including a ceremonial house ceiling from Papua New Guinea that was reinstalled with input from the artist's descendants. The Met has also addressed concerns about artifact provenance by providing detailed signage on the history and ownership of each piece. Visitors have responded positively to the changes, appreciating the enhanced displays and opportunities for cultural connection.

They came to New York from New Zealand and from Mexico and Senegal to give their cultural seal of approval to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new home for works from the global south. The Met's Michael C. Rockefeller wing has just undergone a $70 million renovation. There wasn't really the infrastructure to support all of the content that we wanted to add over the years. And so to really do it right, we had to sort of rip everything out and begin the process anew. From sculptures to jewelry to textiles, the more than 1,800 works of art represent Oceana, sub-Saharan Africa and the indigenous Americas, and come with a new stronger emphasis on the artists behind them. Like this ceremonial Cuomo house ceiling from Papua New Guinea, a highlight from the previous space which has been rearranged with help from the artist's descendants to better reflect their culture. Even right from the first meetings where they brought everyone together, some of the questions were, well, we're intending to have an exhibition on Oceania, on the different Pacific Island nation states, nations, what should we do, how should we do it? So I think involving the communities right at the start is a really good thing to do. The overhaul of the Rockefeller wing comes at a time when museums everywhere are facing increasing scrutiny over how they obtain their artifacts, and in some cases, accusations they were illicitly obtained. The Met aims to put any concerns to rest with signage that details the chain of ownership for each exhibit. At the official reopening, visitors welcome the changes. The quality of the display and the appreciation for these objects here is just superb. It's refreshing and it's arresting the work. Lots of spirituality that can be sensed in the pieces, which is always nice to see with good works of art.
