The malfunction has intensified existing skepticism among some players regarding the accuracy and dependability of AI-based officiating. The event has become a major talking point at the tournament, highlighting the challenges of integrating new technology into longstanding sporting traditions. Other matches over the weekend also saw heightened tensions, but the line-calling issue remained the primary focus.

New tennis AI technology causes disruption for players at Wimbledon

All right, Americans Ben Shelton and Emma Navarro will take to the court of Wimbledon later this morning, hoping to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. The weekend was full of dominant performances and nail-biting matches there on the grass, but one technical glitch, it had everyone talking. Here to break it down is Charlie Eccleshair. He's a tennis writer for The Athletic and joins us from Wimbledon. All right, hey there, Charlie. This year, an electronic system replaced line judges at Wimbledon and there was a missed call. What happened and how might this new tech impact the tournament moving forward? It's kind of a crazy story. Yeah, I mean, the technology basically wasn't working for a game in yesterday's match between Pavlyuchenkova and Sane Cartel. And so Pavlyuchenkova is a key moment as well. It's 4-4 in the first set, she's serving and Cartel hits a shot that goes well long and Pavlyuchenkova thinks she's won the game. But no call is forthcoming and the umpire has to stop play and there's then a sound, an automated sound saying, stop, stop, which comes from the technology when something's malfunctioned. And he basically had to explain to her that, yeah, sorry, the tech had been accidentally deactivated. It was later explained this was human error and so it wasn't working and so we've got to replay the point. And obviously Pavlyuchenkova's raging. She's like, well, it's out, you can see it's out. Just say it's out. But they replayed the point, Pavlyuchenkova loses the point then loses the game and it's 5-4 to her opponent rather than being 5-4 to her. Her opponent, Sane Cartel is going to come out and serve for the first set. And she, at the change of ends, understandably is furious and is saying you stole the game from me. She says, is it because she's a local player? Because Cartel's British. Thankfully for Pavlyuchenkova and possibly the tournament, she breaks back, she wins the set, she wins the match. And so it's not quite as catastrophic as it might've been. But this is the first time that Wimbledon's not used line judges and it's 148 year history and those line judges are kind of part of the rich Wimbledon tapestry. You know, they're always very smartly dressed and it was a big deal anyway. And there were tensions already because some players have said they don't trust the technology. They think there have been calls that are incorrect. So it was all brewing anyway and it kind of nicely came to the boil on Sunday and yeah, kind of exploded into life and was a huge talking point. Look, even human line judges and refs get criticized nonstop. So when the technology legitimately doesn't work and you know, you and I have never played at this level, but the momentum you can imagine that it messes up for these players. Just in our last minute, what are some other big highlights from the weekend? Yeah, I mean, that was the big one, but then you had Pam Norrie of Great Britain reaching the quarterfinals after a pretty epic four and a half hour, five set win against Nicholas Jarry. And there was some aggro and drama in that one as well, because Jarry was annoyed by Norrie bouncing the ball for a really long time and making a lot of noise and he was complaining to the umpire about it. So suddenly it kind of, this was happening soon after the cartel had a chunk of a drama. So it all kind of came to life on what we thought, you know, might be a relatively quiet day. And then on Saturday was one really about the favorites kind of flexing their muscles. You had Yannick Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Iga Svantek making a bit of a statement. She hammered Danielle Collins really, and Collins is a player who's beaten her before, caused her some issues. So yeah, and they're all back in action today. And just to translate, when you said aggro, that's what the kids say for aggravation, right? Aggravation. Plenty of aggro out there. You told a new term. Yeah, so maybe that's a British thing.
