A new housing development is underway in Lawrence, Kansas, designed specifically for women recovering from addiction and their children. The project will offer ten units of affordable, transitional housing, allowing mothers to remain with their children as they transition back into the community after completing addiction treatment.

The initiative, led by Decca, will provide subsidized rent and continued recovery services to residents. Decca CEO Lori Alvarado highlighted the project's potential to help women pursue recovery, maintain family stability, and return to the workforce. Residents like Rose, who shared her personal story, emphasized the importance of such support in easing the challenges faced after treatment.

Well, housing is a hot topic, but what about affordable housing for women who are in recovery from addiction that allows them to stay with their Children? That's what's being built behind me here in Lawrence, Kansas. Hi, my name is Rose. I am an addict and alcoholic. Um, I'm a mother of three boys. Rose stood before the Lawrence community on Thursday to share her story. I just share my story because I support women getting help. Rose says she turned to alcohol after losing one of her Children to SIDS. My escape was alcohol and it became a lifestyle. Rose received treatment and recovery services at Decca last summer. She worked hard to be surrounded by her three kids. They were able to visit her throughout treatment, but there will be a new approach to recovery in Lawrence next year. It looks like this 10 units of affordable housing for women and their Children. It's called transitional housing because it helps those who have completed addiction treatment transition back into the community. Decca CEO Lori Alvarado says it's the most exciting project in her career. I know the difference it's going to make for women and their Children to pursue recovery, keep their Children safe and have a life beyond that is rich and full and blessed with a roof over their heads. Women in recovery will be able to return to the workforce. They'll pay subsidized rent and continue to receive recovery services from Decca all the while surrounded by their family. Rose says this type of housing would have meant everything to her. You got to work really, really hard when you're done with treatment.
