The agreement spares him the death penalty and calls for four consecutive life sentences, though the judge noted the court could impose another lawful sentence at the upcoming sentencing.

During the hearing, prosecutors revealed new details, including Kohberger's purchase of a knife and sheath similar to those used in the murders and evidence of his cell phone being in the area months prior, indicating premeditation. Kohberger admitted to the killings and burglary, and will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole or appeal.

An Idaho judge today signed off on a plea deal reached between the state and the man charged in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students in 2022 at a court hearing in Boise, Idaho, Brian Koberger changed his plea to guilty. For the four first degree murder charges, in exchange he will be spared the death penalty. The 30 year old will be sentenced later this month, but while the plea deal calls for four consecutive life sentences, the judge said the court is not ready for a plea and quote. Could impose another lawful sentence at sentencing. CBS News national correspondent Carter Evans is outside the courthouse in Boise. Carter, great to see you. You were in the courtroom. What more did we learn from the official announcement of the plea deal? You know, we learned a lot more from the prosecution about the case. Some things that we hadn't heard before that he had bought a knife like the one that was used in the murders and the same sheath that they found on Amazon in the months before the murders. They also mentioned that he had been spotted or his cell phone had been located at towers in the area months before the murders occurred, suggesting that he had really planned this out for a long time. It showed a lot of activity around the area. It also said that he entered through the sliding door of the kitchen and then they got to the point where he had to plead guilty and I would tell you there was a lot of family in the courtroom and everybody was pretty stoic until that point. But that's when the tears started coming when the judge mentioned. The victims individually by name and Koberger had to respond guilty or not guilty. He responded guilty to all of those charges against him, including the burglary. So all of those sentences will run concurrently now based or not concurrently. They will run consecutively and he is going to be in jail for the rest of his life. But as you mentioned there, the judge could potentially change this sentence, but he did mention in court. At this point, he could only revise it down because these are life sentences right now. He will spend the rest of his life in prison. There is no opportunity for parole and he is given up his right to appeal. I'll tell you that Koberger showed zero emotion in the courtroom. He looked at the prosecutor when the prosecutor was speaking. He looked at the judge when the judge was speaking. He wasn't nodding. He really didn't show any emotion at all. His parents were sitting in the front row and they didn't see him make eye contact with them even once. So family members were there. It was an emotional moment when he was pleading guilty to the murder charges, but he said that he did commit these murders that he stabbed these four individual students and it was a premeditated crime.
