While opposition leaders have previously rejected joining a Netanyahu-led government, the Prime Minister's coalition remains fragile after recent internal disputes. Israeli authorities estimate that only 20 of the 50 hostages in Gaza are still alive after nearly two years of conflict.

In July, it faced a risk of collapse following a falling out with ultra-Orthodox parties over its failure to pass a draft exemption law for religious students. Netanyahu may eventually need to take up Gantz's offer to maintain a functional governing coalition. Meanwhile, Israel believes only 20 of 50 hostages in Gaza are still alive after 22 months of war.
