A large community effort in Utah has seen nearly 10,000 people register for bone marrow screening in hopes of finding a match for three-year-old Kiri Pak, who was recently diagnosed with cerebral ALD, an aggressive and potentially deadly brain disease. The Pak family, supported by local businesses such as the Boneyard Saloon, organized statewide drives to encourage participation, offering incentives like free lunches to those who took the test.

Participants expressed hope that their involvement could help not only Kiri but also others in need of bone marrow transplants. The family has also set up a website, HopeForKiri.org, for those interested in supporting their cause or learning more about bone marrow donation.

I'm Mark Blain in Park City, where this restaurant saloon stepped up to help a family who desperately needs to find a match for a bone marrow donation to save the life of a three-year-old boy diagnosed with an aggressive brain disease. You never know the difference you can make. We're well over 10,000 kids in two weeks. R.P. Pak, the grandfather of three-year-old Kiri Pak of Holiday, went right to work with the rest of the family almost as soon as his grandson was diagnosed with cerebral ALD. He and the family continued their statewide drive Wednesday at the Boneyard Saloon to have people take bone marrow screenings to see if they match Kiri. And because we know that this group of 10,000 people who are currently doing this, there's a 100% chance that if they get called up, that they're going to be there for Kiri. They're right here. For the folks that submitted to the test at the saloon, there was an incentive. They were treated to a free lunch. I thought it was a good cause, and luckily enough, I like free lunch, and I'm within the age range where I could potentially be a match for a bone marrow. So I figured I'd come up and see if I could help out. We're happy to be a part of this, even though it's a small part of a huge battle. We just hope we can find the proper donor for the little man, to give him an opportunity to enjoy life like a lot of us have. Cerebral ALD can be deadly. As Kiri keeps up his fight, and these folks see if they're a match, they know they might also be making all the difference for another family, praying for a donor. Absolutely, yeah. If I can save anybody's life by doing swabs or even the bone marrow or blood or whatever they need, I definitely would. 10,000 chances and counting, all thanks to these people rallying around Kiri.
