Now the league wants its partners in gambling to reduce the chance that prop bets could affect athletes' performances. Bet $10,000 on my under, you know, this one game I'm going to act like I've got an injury and I'm going to sit out, I'm going to come out after three minutes. And they all get a little bad because you did it one game. Brooklyn Nets player Michael Porter Jr. is the brother of former Toronto Raptors player Jontae Porter. Jontae was banned for life last year after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges that he gave a better information about his own health status and through his in-game performance. That is so not okay, but some people probably think like that. They come from nothing and all their homies have nothing. Since Porter's case, two other players have been placed under investigation for similar actions. Neither has faced criminal charges. The NBA Players Association says it has a different reason to review betting behavior, the abuse players take on and off the court. We really do get death threats. Sports gambling is a massive industry. 39 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized it to the tune of $13.7 billion in revenue just last year. It's a pretty ugly underbelly. Joe Varden is a senior NBA writer for The Athletic who says sports leagues want gambling regulation at the federal level. The leagues want this to be taken out of their own hands. They're clearly seeing what we all knew was going to happen anyway is that just the expansion of sports betting is making the players, making it much easier for them to get in trouble. Part of what makes this so tricky is I can understand why the league and the players union would want the betting platforms to make changes, but for gamblers, it's super exciting to do these prop bets. It's why they're so popular. It feels like a slippery slope though. I think so too. It feels like a slippery slope. For sure. For sure. That's why it's causing issues. It was well explained there. I mean, if you're in the league and you come from nothing and all your friends can make a bunch of money if you miss a free throw that doesn't affect the game, maybe you do it.
