nobody's gonna feel sorry for you this game. That was Padres manager Mike Schilt after yesterday's season-ending loss to the Cubs in the National League wild-card series. The Padres managed only five runs in the three games. ABC 10 News sports director Ben Higgins is here now with the closer look at what went wrong Ben. Yeah the offensive struggles were a big part of it the team went 3 for 26 with runners in scoring position for this series and while a couple of guys like Freddy Fermin and Xander Bogart swung the bat well too many other stars did not. It was an alarming sign of things to come as Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out on three pitches to begin the decisive matchup against the Cubs. In their two losses in Chicago the top three hitters in the Padres lineup Tatis Luis Arias and Manny Machado went a combined 0 for 22. The 6-7-8 hitters also struggled as the lefty trio of Ryan O'Hearn, Gavin Sheets and Jake Cronenworth went 3 for 26 in the series. Not having injured right-handed slugger Ramon Laureano available meant the Padres were vulnerable to the Cubs left-handed relievers. You know unfortunately Ramon wasn't able to to stay with us through this ride because you know him in the seven hole could have made a big difference but he wasn't there. The series wasn't all about Padres failure. The Cubs played virtually flawless baseball in the field led by their gold glove winning shortstop Dansby Swanson. Dansby played his tail off man he almost single-handedly beat us with his glove. San Diego is an unbelievable team they have such a deep pitching staff and obviously great hitters as well and so being able to just limit them in opportunities to score was huge for us and you know end up making a big difference. And then there was the ninth inning with the Padres trailing 3 to 1 a called strike three on a pitch well below the zone cost Xander Bogart's a walk. The Padres got the next two batters on and could have tied the game without a hit but we'll never know what would have happened. Next year we will. Major League Baseball will implement their automated ball strike challenge system which would have turned Xander's strikeout into a walk. Unfortunately it comes too late to save the 2025 Padres season. Nobody's gonna feel sorry for you in this game and we got a bunch of guys in that clubhouse that are hurting but there's no regrets in that clubhouse for anybody our heads are high and we know from day one and we we've laid it out there every day. And what really sticks out for many fans is that Major League Baseball could have implemented the robot umpire technology this year. It was used effectively in spring training but the commissioner decided to wait until 2026 Kimberly. Yeah that was just heartbreaking to see that happen toward the end of the game. Why did he want to wait? That's a good question. Change comes slowly. I guess they've been using it in the minor leagues for six years. Seems pretty secure. They decided to wait one more year. Padres wish it was in place this week. We sure do. Thank you.
