Minneapolis police continue to investigate a shooting near the Lake Street and I-35W transit station on Monday that left five people hurt.

Minneapolis police are investigating a mass shooting near the intersection of East Lake Street and Stevens Avenue, close to the Lake Street transit station. The incident resulted in five people being injured, with four hospitalized and one sustaining a graze wound. 

Authorities report that the area, particularly the path leading to the Greenway under the 35W Overpass, has been a persistent hotspot for crime and drug use. Despite regular clean-up efforts, this marks the third shooting in the area within a month. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and have not yet made any arrests. The police chief has called for the temporary closure of the walkway to address the ongoing safety concerns.

We are following a developing story out of Minneapolis tonight. Police responding to a mass shooting that left five injured near the Lake Street transit station and that area is known as a trouble spot and authorities say that they have had enough. This all happened just after 11 a.m. with shots for fire near the intersection of East Lake Street and Stevens Avenue. Fox 9's Courtney Godfrey joins us now. And so Courtney, what have police told you so far about this? Well, Kelsey, it's still very early in the investigation, so details are limited. But according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, this all happened on the path leading down to the Greenway just below the 35 W Overpass and the Lake Street light rail station. O'Hara says a few dozen shots were fired, sending four people to the hospital and leaving a fifth victim with a graze wound. While he says they aren't yet clear on what led to the shooting, this area has been a hot spot for crime as people often congregate on and around the Greenway there with drug use rampant. Yeah, Courtney, you mentioned hot spot, so it sounds like police have long identified this area as the problem. So the question is, is anything being done to clean this area up? Well, the chief said they had a meeting with various stakeholders just last week to address the issue, saying the area is cleared out and clean twice a day, but that it hasn't helped. And this is the third shooting there in the last month. So he's now calling on the mayor to close access to the walkway altogether, at least for the time being. So, yes, we believe this situation is just contributing to the overall crime problem. And the easiest thing to do is just to shut it down and clean this up. Now, as you'll see here, the shooting was actually captured on Mn dot traffic cameras. You can see everyone scatters and soon after that, police arrive on scene, followed by paramedics. As of right now, police don't have anyone in custody. But in addition to that video that you saw there, there are several cameras in the area which will assist in this investigation.
