The protests are organized by Gen Z 212, a youth movement that mobilized around 170,000 members through the online platform Discord. Participants are calling for reforms in health care, education, and job opportunities, and some have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Aziz Akhanush. The movement has also criticized government spending on sports infrastructure, arguing that funds should be redirected to essential public services.

The protests were organised by Gen Z 212, an internet-savvy youth movement representing Moroccans born between the late 90s and 2010s. The group, which mobilised some 170,000 members via the online gaming platform Discord, surprised authorities with one of the largest demonstrations in Morocco in years. With the Africa Cup of Nations fast approaching, Morocco has invested $1.7 billion in upgrading its stadiums, funding which the youth movement insists could have been prioritised for the health and education sectors.
