Authorities report that the number of confirmed deaths has risen to 131, with many of the missing believed to be visitors who were in the area for holiday celebrations. Search efforts are hampered by rising river levels and debris, and officials estimate that the search and recovery process could take several months. The ongoing disaster has also impacted the local tourism-based economy, with businesses facing uncertainty as reservations and visitors decline.

More flooding threatens Central Texas as search for victims continues

And now to Central Texas. This is day 11 of the search for the missing. The weather is making it difficult. Jason Allen is in Hill Country once again tonight, but we go first to Lonnie Quinn because the rain has returned there. Lonnie? Yeah. And I think it's gonna get worse in the Hill Country. Right now, the Texas Hill Country, shaded in this bright green color, is under a flood watch. And the reason we're so concerned, if we look from above down into the state of Texas, put the cloud cover in place, it's this big string of clouds. It's not going anywhere because the East Coast right now has a stalled front. Once you get something stalled on the East Coast, it's like a traffic jam. Nothing else moves. So with that cloud cover continuing to pull in moisture from not only the Gulf, it's also actually drawing some moisture from the Pacific Ocean. You get these big rainfall numbers, but a stationary system will give big numbers in one area and not so much in others. So nine to 10 inches in the last 24 hours in Uvalde, Texas. Kerrville has picked up just shy of an inch. The concern is this can all flip-flop as you go through the overnight hours into early morning. So that flood watch has been expanded for the entire Hill Country until 7 a.m. Gentlemen. Monty Quinn, thank you. Over the weekend, the number of confirmed deaths there rose by 10 and now stands at 131. Jason Allen has the latest on the search. Searchers had to head to higher ground today as rivers started cutting off roads. They have been looking through the mud and debris piles for bodies. During a county meeting this morning, Kerr's top elected official, Judge Rob Kelly, revealed many of the missing were visitors. It's the tourists that came in for the fourth weekend, the concert, the fireworks. We don't know how many we lost. We've heard accounts of trailer after trailer after trailer being swept into the river with families in them. Can't find the trailers. At 5 a.m. on July 4th, the river was rushing by at 1.5 million gallons per second. Before and after satellite images show how that amount of water lifted homes off their foundations and swept them away in Hunt, Texas, where Penny Dupree and eight family members had gathered for the 4th of July weekend. When I saw that water coming through the front door, it looked like an ocean to me. The loft they climbed to wasn't high enough, so they broke through the wall to get to the roof. We're trying to punch our way through the plywood. I think this is the one that was mainly used to try and get through there, just beating out of desperation. I didn't stand up, I crawled. I can do it, I can do it, I can do it, I can do it. Nine family members, including a one-year-old and a three-year-old, squeezed through the hole into the water and onto the roof. Did you feel? No. You feel like you're out of the woods at that point? I had turned around and just looked at this house, and I see the front end of this house start collapsing. The rest of the house held together until the water finally receded. But family's the most important thing in my life, and God and family, that's what gets you through it. And those are, I mean, that's what the flood did not take away. No, it didn't. Sheriff out here said today they've got another month or two of work out here easily, but they could be looking for people for the next six months. Jason, that is so striking. Why would that be the case, six months? You look at this water back here, they are talking, Maurice, about draining some of these lakes and reservoirs. They're also bringing in more sonar to look for people, and they have to do this all up and down the river. It is an immensely huge amount of work they have to do. Jason, when they think about six months and getting out of this situation, how's the community reacting to that kind of a timeline going forward? John, they're already thinking about that. This is a tourism-based community. They expect to have people here all through July and August. And already we've talked to people who've said those reservations, those plans for people are drying up. Customers are drying up.
