India has released water from upstream dams, warning Pakistan of imminent floods, which has contributed to flooding in the Punjab region on both sides of the border. Nearly 800 people have died in Pakistan during this monsoon season, and authorities warn that with more rain forecast, the situation is unlikely to improve soon.

In northern India's Himachal Pradesh province, people can do nothing but watch as buildings collapse into flood-swollen rivers. Heavy monsoon rains have caused flash flooding across northern India and Pakistan, displacing tens of thousands. In Indian-administered Kashmir, 30 people were killed by landslides on a road to a Hindu pilgrimage site. Damage to roads, collapsed bridges and power outages there have slowed rescue efforts. India says more than 360 millimetres of rain fell in the region on Tuesday alone. People are being warned not to attempt any journeys and to stay away from riverbanks. In the first diplomatic contact between the two countries in months, India warned Pakistan of imminent floods as it released water from upstream dams. That's contributed to flooding in the Punjab region on both sides of the border. Thousands of people had to be moved to safety as rivers burst their banks and flooded farms. Our houses were submerged and everything was destroyed, mostly mud houses collapsed. We saved our animals and children. Nearly 800 have died in Pakistan in this year's monsoon season.
