The mayor outlined a strategy that includes careful withdrawals from reserve accounts, leaving some positions unfilled to avoid layoffs, and raising both property tax levies by 3% and the vehicle registration fee by $10.

The proposed budget also prioritizes public safety, with plans to recruit the maximum number of police academy candidates. Mayor Johnson noted that recent traffic deaths have decreased, attributing this to traffic calming measures funded in previous budgets. A joint public hearing on the budget is scheduled to take place at City Hall.

The mayor announced plans to close the gap through three approaches. Careful withdrawals from reserve accounts, avoiding layoffs at departments by not filling vacant positions and raising revenue expectations by raising property tax levies by 3% and raising the vehicle registration fee by $10. The mayor believes these actions will fully fund the $2 billion budget. In addition to closing that gap, the mayor is emphasizing the need for public safety by recruiting the maximum number of people for the Police Academy. Recent deadly crashes in the city have alarming and many other people across Milwaukee. But from the tragedies and the sadness, we are even more resolved to make sure that we increase safety on our streets. And the mayor stated that traffic deaths have dropped in Milwaukee. He says that's in part to the traffic calming measures that have been funded through previous budgets. A joint public hearing on the budget, he said for Monday, October 6th at City Hall.
