On the third day of the federal trial of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan, jurors heard testimony from Chief Judge Carl Ashley and Dugan's courtroom clerk, Alan Freed. The testimony centered on a draft, but not official, policy regarding the presence of ICE agents in the courthouse and the circumstances under which an undocumented immigrant exited the courtroom.

Chief Judge Ashley clarified that no formal policy was in place at the time of the incident, and Dugan's defense highlighted the lack of clear direction for judges. Federal prosecutors expect to call four more witnesses before resting their case, after which the defense will begin presenting its side.

as critical new testimony today in the federal trial of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan as jurors could learn exactly what the county's policy was when it came to ice agents in the courthouse. Judge Dugan has pled not guilty to charges for allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant avoid arrest by federal agents. Our chief political reporter Charles Benson is following day three of the trial and Charles jurors heard from Milwaukee County's chief judge. Why was that important today? Well, it's important because what we've been hearing from the very start of this trial is about a draft policy. That's something that had been in motion by the chief judge judge there. Carl Ashley about what was being talked about with the other judges because there was a growing concern about ice agents inside the or the state courthouse of the Milwaukee County courthouse. But when asked if this policy was an official policy, the chief judge saying, quote, it was not today when asked by the federal prosecutors. But Judge Ashley made it clear that in his testimony and in emails to other judges when he was talking about this draft policy that he was concerned about ice presence in the courthouse and in public areas, uh, suggesting the potential for, quote, erosion of trust or, quote, chilling effect on access to justice. But Judge Ashley made it clear today he never told those federal agents that were there on April 18th that they could not make an arrest inside the public area. The Dugan defense team pushing on this, suggesting that Ashley also never established a clear policy or direction for judges to follow because it was still being vetted. It was still under review. So this was a key part of the testimony today by listening to the chief chief judge. We also heard from another person inside the court Judge Dugan's courtroom. That is Alan Freed. He is Dugan's clerk. He's inside Dugan's courtroom for a series of events, including those seven words that we heard from federal prosecute federal prosecutors in their opening statements attributed to Judge Dugan saying, quote, I'll do it. I'll get the heat. And we're also hearing more. By the way, I should say Freed is also not happy when he learns that there are ice agents or federal agents in the courthouse. Now, Eduardo Flores Ruiz. We've been talking about how he was able to exit Dugan's courtroom through a non public hallway and out another door. But we're also hearing about that public or non public hallway also had a staircase that would have allowed him to go downstairs and out of the courthouse without those federal agents ever seeing him. But he ends up going through that public, non public hallway and out another door that did put him in the public hallway where the federal agents were able to see him and follow him outside the courthouse. Andrea and Charles, this is day three now of the government or federal prosecutor calling witnesses. How much longer for them? Well, we just heard heard from federal prosecutors. They think they'll have maybe four more witnesses, and they expect to rest their side of the case here maybe by mid afternoon.
