The Midwestern United States is experiencing extreme cold, with warnings and advisories issued across the region. Satellite imagery shows a combination of high pressure and fresh snow pack contributing to the cold, with most areas remaining below freezing.

Criteria for extreme cold warnings vary by location, but the cold is widespread, affecting cities such as Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and areas in Ohio and Illinois. Several of these locations are expected to break records for cold high temperatures during this weather event.

We have the extreme cold warnings. No surprise right where we do have some of that fresh snow and cold weather advisories. What's the difference? Well, it's different for each region. What meets that criteria for an extreme cold warning? That's not going to be the same for Minneapolis as it is, say, an Indianapolis, so you're going to have some different criteria for that. But bottom line, it's cold across the board and this enhanced satellite is showing you some of that flow around the high pressure, but it's also showing you that fresh snow pack that is on the ground. That is very cold right now, giving us that refrigerator effect. High pressure that's in charge right now. That is clearing out our skies. High temperatures today. Most of us not going above that freezing marked Mark Dodge City just barely above freezing and Lynette. I'll leave you with this. All of these places, Ohio, Illinois, Indianapolis likely to break a record with cold high temperatures.
