Members of the public detained several teenagers at the scene until police arrived, though some fled before authorities could question them. The injured man is being treated for head and facial injuries at Royal North Shore Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Police have taken a 13-year-old girl into custody and are continuing their investigation.

Sandra, this was an incredibly distressing scene for everyone at the shopping centre this afternoon. A lot of these details are still coming to hand, but what we do know is that police were called here just before midday. When they arrived with paramedics, they found a 59-year-old man on the floor of the shopping centre. Now, they say he was walking on the ground floor when he was struck from above by a falling trolley. Now, police allege it was a 13-year-old girl on the third level of this shopping centre that tossed that trolley over the balcony down onto the ground below. Now, obviously, there were plenty of witnesses around at this time. It was nearly lunchtime in busy Chatswood. I've spoken to a number of people who have described their distress at watching all of this unfold. Now, it was a number of members of the public that actually sprung into action and took what they described as a group of three to four young teenagers into a citizen's arrest of sorts and held as many of them as they could here until police arrived. Ultimately, a couple of them, I'm told, ran from the scene. And as we know tonight, a 13-year-old girl is currently in police custody at Chatswood Police Station, where she is assisting police with their inquiries. Meanwhile, this 59-year-old man is at Royal North Shore being treated for head and facial injuries. Sandra, we understand tonight he is in a stable condition.
