An armed robber has fallen to his death from a balcony of a Surry Hills apartment block while trying to evade police. Police will be investigating their actions ahead of the incident.

A 49-year-old man died after falling from a five-storey apartment block in Surry Hills following an armed robbery at a nearby grocer. The man, whose face was covered and who was armed with a knife, threatened a store worker and left with the cash register. He was later joined by a woman, identified by police as 21-year-old Tiana Hatch, and both went to a nearby apartment block. Police arrived about an hour later, at which point the man attempted to flee by jumping from a balcony, resulting in his death. 

Police have declared the incident a critical incident, meaning their actions leading up to the man's death will be investigated. Tiana Hatch was charged with robbery and other offences, appeared in court, and was granted conditional bail. The grocer and those involved are now coming to terms with the events.

After a rocky start, he stormed the store, threatening the worker behind the counter who refused to hand over the cash. He's shocking, he's stressed, so I told him just get dressed. A customer tried to fend him off with a mob, but to no avail. He marched out of the store with the till in hand. Outside, he's joined by a woman, who police claim is 21-year-old Tiana Hatch. The pair allegedly made their way to an apartment block a couple of hundred metres away. An hour later, officers followed. The male, who was aged in his 40s, has spotted police and then, as I said before, ran out to the back of the unit and jumped off the balcony. And then looked out my bedroom window, looked down, and there was a guy on the ground. Pretty messed up. Police and later paramedics rushed to help, but after a five-storey fall, there was little they could do. They acted bravely and professionally. They rendered first aid to the man until the arrival of ambulance, but unfortunately he passed away. Police have declared last night's events a critical incident, meaning they'll investigate their own actions in the lead-up to the 49-year-old's death. Tiana Hatch was allegedly inside the apartment at the time and is accused of slamming the door on police. She's been charged with robbery and company and some associated other offences. Today, she faced court and was granted conditional bail. She'll be subject to a nightly curfew and banned from going within 100 metres of the grocer, now coming to terms with yesterday's events after a harrowing night for all involved.
