A 71-year-old grandfather has been attacked trying to stop a man from allegedly grabbing a 12-year-old boy on Sydney’s northern beaches. Police have now charged a 44-year-old with several offences including assault.

A 71-year-old grandfather sustained injuries after allegedly being assaulted while protecting his 12-year-old grandson in Manly, NSW. According to police, a 44-year-old man, unknown to the child, approached the boy at an intersection and attempted to grab his arm and lead him away. The grandfather intervened and was allegedly attacked and punched several times. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and has been charged with several offences, including common assault. He appeared in court and did not apply for bail, with the matter set to return to court later in the month.

The 71-year-old grandfather's shirt is ripped and he is visibly shaken by the incident. Police say at around 8pm on Friday night, a 44-year-old man approached the 12-year-old boy at an intersection in Collaroy. It's alleged the man, not known to the child, tried to make conversation with the boy before trying to grab his arm and lead him away from the area. The boy's grandfather then stepped in, but the 44-year-old man allegedly attacked him, bringing him to the ground and punching him several times. The 44-year-old was arrested a short time later. He faced court today on several charges including common assault, no bail application was made and the matter will reappear in court later this month.
