Mal Lanyon has been named the new New South Wales Police Commissioner, after bipartisan support from State Parliament. His 38-year career wasn't without controversy.

Mal Lanyon has been appointed as the 24th Police Commissioner for New South Wales, following a lengthy career that has included leading disaster recovery, targeting organised crime, and managing the state's COVID-19 response. His selection was confirmed by Cabinet and is supported across party lines, despite previous incidents that had affected his candidacy for the role in the past.

Lanyon addressed two past controversies: an altercation with paramedics in 2021 and using a police boat for personal purposes. He expressed regret for these actions and stated his intention to unify the police organisation. Lanyon, who most recently led the state's Reconstruction Authority, is set to begin his five-year term as commissioner, with his successor at the disaster agency yet to be named.

In 2021, he told paramedics to F off when they found him drunk on a footpath near the Big Merino in Goulburn, an incident that ruled him out of being the 23rd Police Commissioner. I deeply regret the circumstances of that evening. They were completely out of character. While in the past week, it was leaked that he took his wife and friends on an operational police boat for New Year's Eve two years ago. When I look at it now, it's not something I should have done. Indiscretions overlooked. This decision was not made based on who had the mistake-free perfect record. It was based on who I believe should be in the Commissioner's chair on New South Wales' worst day. But the leak about the New Year's joyride continues a concerning trend. His predecessor was routinely a victim of backrounding and backstabbing. Karen Webb's retirement was even leaked before she could announce it. Lanyon plans to address that... ..with a very firm focus on unifying the organisation. The appointment was confirmed by Cabinet this morning, despite rumours he wasn't the police minister's first choice. I think we will make a great team going forward, but I will not peddle in gossip. It at least has bipartisan support. He's tough on crime, empathetic with victims, strong in crisis management and is a strong choice for New South Wales. Lanyon has most recently led the state's disaster agency, the Reconstruction Authority. Who takes over there is yet to be decided.
