A significant snowstorm that initially affected the Midwest has now moved into the Northeast, delivering up to a foot of snow in parts of New England and causing hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has advised residents along the Maine coast to avoid travel, while hundreds of crashes and over 1,600 flight delays have been reported across the region.

The storm has set snowfall records in cities such as Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton, and brought as much as 15 inches of snow to parts of Michigan. Ski resorts near New York City, including Hunter Mountain, have welcomed the fresh snow after several years of low accumulation, providing a boost to local economies.

Good evening, I'm John Dickerson. I'm Maurice Dubois. It is here. The storm that dumped snow on the Midwest is now doing the same right here in the Northeast. And a lot of it. Parts of New England could get as much as a foot from what is the first major snowstorm of the season. In many places, getting around is treacherous. The National Weather Service is warning residents along the coast of Maine to delay all travel, if possible. Lonnie Quinn is tracking the storm, but we begin with the impact it's having. Tom Hanson's in the Hudson Valley, north of New York City. Tom. Well, the snow has mainly tapered off here, but I want to give you guys an idea of the consistency. So take a look at this snow. This is dense, it is wet, and it's causing major driving issues from the Midwest to the Northeast. Firefighters rushed to save this truck driver in West Virginia, left dangling for five hours after his truck plowed through a barrier on an overpass. It may have been caused by slick roads. The safer we got that harness on him, the safer we was and the faster we could get out of there. Hundreds of crashes were caused by a major winter storm that left dangerous driving conditions across much of the Northeast. While it was rain for cities along the East Coast, at least half a foot of snow fell across the interior from Ohio to Maine. Oh, goodness gracious Lord. The powerful storm created treacherous conditions on highways near Scranton, Pennsylvania. While crews in Rochester, New York, de-iced planes in heavy snow as more than 1,600 flights were delayed across the region. And in Albany, this camera captured snow blanketing the city in just a few hours. Snowplows shifted into high gear in Middletown, New York. 20 have been deployed to keep the roads clear. We're out here just doing the best as we can, trying to get people home safe, doing from work, doing from home. Snowplow driver Robert Reynolds started his day at seven this morning. He's not sure when it will end. We'll stay out here until the storm stops and at least a few hours after that. And as we look ahead to the evening hours, the temperatures here are going to drop well below freezing. So take a look at the street behind me and all of that glossiness. That is going to turn to ice. Black ice, they call it. Tom Hanson, thank you. Madeline Quinn with where the storm is headed and what we can expect from Atlanta. Okay, right now we've got snow falling in Northern New England. There's your picture. You can zoom in tight there. Where that's going to be by sunrise, let's say sunrise around 702 tomorrow morning, it will be offshore entirely. It's a pretty quick mover. And for that portion of our country, from this point forward, they could see potentially eight to 10 inches of snow, but this has already been a record setter. Now in Ohio, the numbers were not enormous, but look at this, record setters for the date for Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton, two to four inches of snow. Bigger numbers in portions of Michigan. In fact, the biggest number I can show you, Cross Village, Michigan, 15 inches. Phoenicia, New York, with a foot of snow. And some people, like folks in Phoenicia, love this. And the reason is, big part of their economy. This is one of the ski areas outside of New York City. Hunter Mountain, that's a foot of fresh powder. And for folks around Hunter Mountain who have been starved for snow over the last couple of years, this is very welcome for those guys. A big part of how they make their money. Yes, maybe some people calling in sick tomorrow. I think there's a few right there. Yeah.
