The M23 rebel group has announced it will withdraw its forces from the city of Uvira in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The withdrawal, which M23 stated would be completed by the day after the announcement, follows requests from U.S. mediators who recently brokered a peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda.

Although the DRC and Rwanda signed a peace agreement in Washington on December 4, the M23 rebels were not included in the talks. Shortly after the signing, M23 captured Uvira, a city near the borders with Burundi and Rwanda. The group has stated its withdrawal is for the sake of peace, and reports confirm that M23 troops have begun leaving the city voluntarily.

The rebel group M23 announced that its forces would exit the strategic city of Javira in eastern DRC. The rebel group announced its withdrawal on Wednesday and said that it would complete it on Thursday at the latest. The move reportedly comes at the request of mediators from the US, which recently negotiated a peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda, accused of backing the M23. Despite the leaders of the two countries signing the peace agreement in Washington on 4th December, the M23 rebels were not included in the negotiations. As a result, they captured Javira, which is situated near the borders with Burundi and Rwanda just days after the peace deal. The M23 said its withdrawal was happening for the sake of peace and reports confirmed that the troops began leaving the town voluntarily.
