Journalists in London have held a vigil for their Palestinian colleagues murdered by Israel in Gaza. More than 240 journalists have been killed so far. UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer is being urged to do more to protect journalists.

A group of UK journalists, representing the London freelance branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), gathered outside Downing Street to deliver a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The letter urges the UK government to pressure Israel to halt the killing of journalists in Gaza, support a binding UN convention for journalist protection, allow greater access for journalists in Gaza, and back an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into the alleged targeting of media workers.

The protest highlighted the deaths of more than 200 journalists in Gaza, including several from Al Jazeera, making it the deadliest conflict for journalists on record. The journalists called on the UK to uphold its stated commitments to press freedom and to take concrete steps to protect journalists working in conflict zones.

So I've got on my hands here a letter demanding action and a group of UK journalists is about to hand this in to the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to demand that he put pressure, real pressure, on Israel to stop killing journalists in record numbers and I've come to Downing Street to watch him do it. This is the London freelance branch of the NUJ, the National Union of Journalists, and these people have come to this famous black door because they want the UK to live up to its professed commitments to press freedom. Now this letter has got six points but the main ones are what are you going to do, Keir Starmer, to support a binding UN convention on protecting journalists? Also what are you going to do to support the access of other journalists to get into Gaza to report on what's really going on there? And what are you going to do to support an ICC investigation into the deliberate targeting of journalists by Israel? These placards are for the more than 200 journalists that Israel has killed in Gaza. It's been the single deadliest conflict for journalists by a huge margin and no other war comes close. The dead include correspondent Anas Al-Sharif and nine other Al Jazeera media workers. Today we will say their names and honour the courage of all the journalists murdered in this genocide. To murder a journalist covering a conflict is a war crime. Now journalism, as Al Jazeera has long pointed out, is not a crime, it's not something to be prosecuted for and it's certainly not something to be killed for. Now these are principles that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he upholds. These journalists are saying it is time for the UK government to stand up for that and pressure Israel to stop killing their colleagues. Rory Challance, Al Jazeera in London.
