While Tropical Storm Imelda churned up rough surf off the shore of Folly Beach, conditions remained calm enough for people to get out and enjoy the day, as seen in this live report with AccuWeather's Ali Reid.

Hurricane Imelda, which had been gaining strength off the southeast coast, is now moving out to sea due to the influence of the more powerful Hurricane Umberto. This shift has spared coastal areas in South Carolina, such as Folly Beach and Charleston, from significant storm surge, flooding, and damaging winds. 

Local residents and tourists expressed relief, with many noting that only light rain and overcast skies were experienced, and major flooding in low-lying areas like downtown Charleston did not occur. The interaction between the two storms, known as the Fujiwara effect, allowed Umberto to steer Imelda away from land, resulting in manageable conditions along the coast.

And Imelda continues to gain strength off the southeast coast, but Hurricane Umberto going to steer it out to sea. So we've got storm surge flooding and flooding rain and gusty winds will not be in short supply along parts of the southeast coast this week. Accuweather's Allie Reed joins us from Folly Beach, South Carolina, where she's tracking the conditions. Allie, it's windy there. Yeah, certainly there's gonna be some wind to go along with the rough surf behind us as well. But ultimately here in South Carolina, specifically live from Folly Beach this evening, the overall consensus here is that people are very happy with the fact that and some smiling faces. Oh, I don't know, though. They're they're repping Cincinnati. I don't know if I could, uh, Bengals. Not so much, but lots of smiling faces to go around here in South Carolina, and that has been the overall mood throughout the day today. A lot of people saying, You know what? Thank goodness Imelda turned off. It went into sea. It wasn't going to make that landfall, and that has been what has led to those smiling faces throughout the day today. I want to take this video if we can to give you kind of that side by side perspective. Okay, so we're live from Folly Beach, but then about 20 minutes down the road from where we are is gonna be that downtown Charleston area. Now, if you are familiar with this region, you know that Charleston is notorious for flooding, and that's because it is in a low lying region. So time and time again, even with just a little bit of rain, sometimes the downtown area can really see some significant flooding. That was gonna be the question throughout the day today. Now, the good news is, is that if you could see around us, not sunny skies, but we've got some overcast clouds here, right? And we've been seeing the rain at times. It was a little heavier earlier this morning, but for the most part, it was rather light when you're talking about rain throughout the day today. So again, the low lying areas, the areas that you potentially would see that flooding. Thankfully, you didn't see that today here in Charleston. Now we got talking to some people throughout the downtown area who said there's one guy we got talking to said we were here for a wedding and he's grateful. Take a listen. They were holding their breath a little bit. I think there's a little conversation around. Are we gonna be able to get out? But thankfully it veered off a little bit and everything works out pretty good. It looks like people are still out enjoying the day. I mean, we're from L. A. So we don't see rain all that often. So getting a little bit of overcast weather is nice. So he's enjoying the outdoors. A lot of people overall consensus. That's the same thing. And guys, if we can take back live now, here's the pier. So again, you see some of those angry waves. But we think back to a few weeks ago and talking about Hurricane Aaron and North Carolina waves. They're much stronger, much louder, much angrier. We were seeing anywhere from 10 to 12 ft waves just a few weeks ago when we're talking about that here. Very different scenario. Certainly a sight to see. And many people agreeing. I mean, if you take a look up on the pier, you will see some people that are just veering out enjoying the day today. We've seen some surfers, but no people that are in the water because they say it's too dangerous. The whip currents rip currents are too strong for that to happen today. But again, overall consensus overall feeling of the day today. Thank goodness, Jeff, that it started to veer out to sea. Well, Ali, even if you occasionally run into a few Cincinnati fans, you always find the birds fans, even if they're from Southern California. How about that? Thanks for your report there. Good stuff. And we're glad this is a very manageable. Of course. Yeah, good stuff. Valley will check back in with you in a little bit here. Heading up the road to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Here we are in far northeastern South Carolina, and you can see the rain out there and some rough surf, but a manageable storm for us. And this is kind of what the doctor ordered. It's been good that we are dealing with again a little bit of a delayed push north for the storm because that allowed the upper level low pressure system to weaken enough that the vacuum effect here that that would have imparted on the Carolina coast. It's kind of running out of batteries right now, so that is shutting off. And now the dominant factor is powerhouse Hurricane Umberto with its circulation beginning to kind of dictate what's going on in conjunction with the base of this trough off the East Coast. So on average, the most significant flow now near Imelda is a west to east push is going to take it out to sea after its drift north, where it produced flooding rain in the Bahamas. It's on an unusual path. I do want to point out again. Melissa Constanza has been tracking this late last week. She talked about the Fujiwara effect. You can learn more about that from Alex to Silva on Accuweather dot com. If you get two big storms within about 850 miles of one another, sometimes we begin to see the Fujiwara effect in which one interacts with the other. Here we're dealing with under 600 miles separating the two storms. So the more powerful storm Umberto is going to dictate what happens to Imelda and taking it out to sea. So this is ultimately a good thing.
