Co-owner Scott Pines reports about $50,000 in tariff charges this year, forcing the business to consider passing some costs to customers despite economic uncertainty.

Derek Miller, CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, highlights the importance of supporting small businesses, which make up 99% of Utah businesses and employ about half of the state's workforce. He encourages local spending, especially during the holiday season, to help sustain these businesses and create jobs within the community.

At Cactus and Tropicals in Salt Lake City, where every corner you turn, there's something that surprises you and is beautiful. The garland is up, the Christmas lights are on, and the poinsettias are in full bloom. Now Cactus and Tropicals co-owner Scott Pines just hopes the holiday shoppers will follow. All of us who are small businesses are trying to survive and to make it work. So any help that we can get, this year especially, we'd appreciate. This year, Small Business Saturday comes at a challenging time for the plant store. Most all of the living plants come from the U.S., so we don't have tariffs on those. But about a third of our sales are non-plant products, and a lot of those come from Asia and the tariffs are hitting us very hard. Their stores have been particularly hard hit by tariffs on pottery. I think we have one or two producers of pots that are in the U.S., but the vast majority of this comes either from China or Vietnam. Which Pines says few U.S. manufacturers specialize in. Already we've got this year about $50,000 in tariff charges. We have to pass some of those costs along. We've been very hesitant to so far because the economy is shaky right now, but we have no choice. With so much economic uncertainty for both businesses and consumers, Pines says he's nervous in a way he's felt only a few other times in 40 years of owning his own businesses. So I mean, are we just at the beginning of something or are we through the worst of it? We're trying to figure that out. Unfortunately, with the tariffs, with the inflation that we're continuing to struggle under, both households and businesses, they have anything but stability and anything but certainty. Derek Miller, the CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, wants people to support small businesses all year round. But with all the challenges these businesses have faced this year, he thinks Small Business Saturday is an important reminder of the value they bring. I prefer, especially at this time of year, to call them the heartbeat of our economy because these small businesses are really what makes our communities. Miller says about 99% of Utah businesses are classified as small businesses and that they employ about half of all Utahns. So when people are spending money locally, what they're doing is not only supporting that business, but what they're really doing is helping to create jobs right in their own community. So whether you're just starting your holiday shopping or ticking the final items off your list, Miller says buying local can be a win for everyone. It'll be a joy to them and whatever they end up buying there, especially if it's a gift for someone else, it'll be a joy to that person too. In Salt Lake City, Taylor Stevens, FOX 13 News, Utah.
