Lightning is being blamed for sparking at least 10 wildfires in the Grand Junction area in the past 24 hours, according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.

The Lee fire in Rio Blanco County has burned over 137,000 acres and is close to becoming one of the state's largest wildfires, though it is now 86% contained. The Stoner Mesa fire in the San Juan National Forest has grown to more than 10,000 acres with 32% containment, while the La Plata fire, caused by an abandoned campfire, has burned over 100 acres and remains uncontained. The Derby fire, burning on the Garfield-Eagle County line, has expanded to over 4,000 acres, prompting mandatory evacuations and pre-evacuation notices. Firefighters continue to monitor the situation closely, with concerns about further lightning and gusty winds potentially igniting new fires.

On Wildfire Watch tonight we have an update to the wildfires burning on the western slope. The Lee fire in Rio Blanco County is now just two acres away from being the fourth largest wildfire in Colorado history. This fire has burned more than 137,000 acres. Now, good news suppression efforts in the north western corner of the fire were successful, but with the chance of more lightning and gusty winds, firefighters are preparing for any new fires to spark. This fire is 86% contained. Now let's get to the stoner Mesa fire, which continues to grow in the San Juan National Forest. This fire began at the end of July. It's grown to more than 10,000 acres with 32% containment four miles southwest of Twin Lakes. The La Plata fire has now burned more than 100 acres. The U. S. Forest Service confirms the fire was caused by an abandoned campfire. You can see it here. Law enforcement is currently looking for that person responsible because this fire is 0% contained. Finally, the Derby fire has burned more than 500 acres since yesterday morning. It's now more than 4000 acres with zero containment. It's burning on the Garfield Eagle County line and mandatory evacuations and pre evacuation notices are still in effect tonight.
