But after last week's flooding, he, his wife and their five children now call this classroom home. The dam collapsed and exploded in the blink of an eye. We made it here safely but deaths are in the thousands. The walls of this makeshift shelter for the displaced echo similar stories. Suha and her mother Halime escaped war in Sudan in April, only to become refugees once again. My husband came to Libya seeking shelter and work. We escaped from the floods and the dam collapsed. I don't feel secure. I have no house to stay in anymore. The world has to turn their attention to us. We are human beings and deserve a decent life and dignity. I got emotional because the flood has killed a lot of my friends. Death is hovering everywhere. I have no words. The water has washed away all the people I know. Hundreds of Libyans, migrants and refugees now live in makeshift shelters like this one. It's not a long-term solution, but at the moment, it's all they have. Their losses from this disaster, innumerable. Hospitals in Derna are calmer at the moment, but work continues behind the scenes to identify bodies, a process even more complicated for non-Libyans. There are many foreigners who came illegally, mostly of the Egyptian nationalities. Many of them are workers without papers and they were resident in crowded places. Some houses have 60, 70 persons. Most of them have expired. Unidentified bodies are DNA tested, photographed and kept in the morgue. But after morgues reached capacity, authorities were forced to bury them. The local people, most of us have relatives who are asking and searching. If they are not found, they can be classified as dead people. So for Libyans, maybe we'll have the true numbers, but for foreigners, it will be difficult. The lucky ones had their dreams washed away. The unlucky, their bodies.
