Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has had a late night phone call with US President Donald Trump, however there is still no news about if or when the pair will meet in person.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defence Minister Richard Marles met with their Japanese counterparts in Tokyo for the 12th Foreign and Defence Ministers meeting, with regional security and China as key topics. The meeting followed a phone call between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump, where trade and economic issues were discussed. 

This was the fourth call between Albanese and Trump since Trump's re-election, but a face-to-face meeting has yet to be scheduled. The earliest opportunity for such a meeting may arise during the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The progress of the AUKUS defence agreement and the impact of US tariffs were also highlighted during the discussions.
