Labour leader Keir Starmer has been officially appointed as the United Kingdom's new prime minister. The Labour Party secured more than 400 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons. This landslide victory ends 14 years of Conservative Party rule.

Starmer's arrival at Downing Street was met by enthusiastic supporters. He pledged a government focused on efficiency and service. In his acceptance speech, Starmer emphasized a mandate from the public to bring about change.

King Charles formally appointed Starmer after Rishi Sunak relinquished the post. Sunak acknowledged the electorate's decision, citing their anger and disappointment as pivotal in his party's defeat. The Conservative Party faced significant losses, with twelve cabinet ministers and former Prime Minister Liz Truss voted out.

The right-of-centre Reform Party managed to secure only five seats despite obtaining 15% of the vote. The Scottish National Party also experienced a significant setback, losing about three-quarters of its parliamentary seats.

Starmer promptly began forming his cabinet. Rachel Reeves has been appointed the UK's first-ever female Chancellor of the Exchequer. David Lammy will serve as the new Foreign Secretary. Starmer and Lammy will soon attend a NATO summit in Washington, where they are expected to continue supporting Ukraine.

Regarding the Gaza conflict, the Labour Party's manifesto indicates support for recognizing the state of Palestine, although this is contingent upon progress toward a two-state solution. The Labour Party's traditional support for Palestine may lead to internal pressures for a more robust stance on Israel.

Political transitions in the UK are quick and brutal for those leaving office. Sunak seemed humble and humbled as he left Downing Street for the last time. I am sorry. I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change and yours is the only judgement that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss. Sunak's Conservative Party had the worst night ever in its history. Twelve of its cabinet ministers were voted out, as was a former Prime Minister, Liz Truss, whose disastrous 50-day term in 2022 led to a run on the pound. The right-of-centre Reform Party only got five seats, despite securing 15% of the vote. The Scottish National Party, meanwhile, had an awful night, losing about three-quarters of its seats, a serious setback for the cause of independence for Scotland. Starmer, as he promised, has got straight to work appointing his cabinet. As expected, Rachel Reeves becomes the UK's first-ever female Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the Finance Minister. The policy on Ukraine is unlikely to change, with strong support still extended to President Zelensky's government. With regard to the war on Gaza, Labour, in its manifesto, said it would recognise the state of Palestine, but that's unlikely to happen until there's progress on a two-state solution. However, the Labour Party traditionally is a strong supporter of Palestine, and with over 400 MPs, there are bound to be some that want tougher action towards Israel, and there may therefore be internal pressure on the Prime Minister.
