The Kansas House has passed legislation increasing penalties for repeat offenders who flee from police, following the recent death of Kansas City police officer Hunter Simoncic.

Kansas legislators are reviewing a bill designed to increase penalties for individuals who repeatedly attempt to evade police. The proposed law follows a recent incident in which a police officer was killed during a pursuit, as well as past cases that have affected law enforcement families.

Supporters of the bill, including those who have lost family members in police chases, believe the tougher penalties could help deter repeat offenders and aid in the healing process for affected families. However, some opponents argue that the bill could result in disproportionately harsh punishments for third-time offenders, as the proposed felony charges are typically reserved for violent crimes. The bill is set to be considered further when the Kansas Legislature reconvenes.

We're outside of KCKC, where earlier this week police say that a suspect ran their car into officer Hunter Simonson during a chase killing him. I spoke with a woman who says she's experienced a loss like this before about how legislation for repeat offenders could potentially help families in their healing process. Teresa McBride has seen the pain that comes with a line of duty death. She's also experienced it herself. McBride's brother in law, Jeff Young, was a KCK PD officer in 1989 when a suspect ran into a roadblock during a chase killing him. To this day, McBride thinks of Jeff. You know, he was a really funny guy. He did all kinds of things, you know, learned all kinds of stuff. More than 30 years after Young's death, the Kansas House passed a bill increasing the consequences for people who consistently run from police. Representative john Ressman is a member of the committee who first heard the bill. It could be another charge that the D. A. Can bring. Um, and hopefully, um, you know, the person will do more time and help be held accountable for what they've done. According to a supplemental note about the legislation, opponents of the bill think it will give disproportionate punishment to third time offenders in the felony charges they are proposing are typically for violent offenders for McBride. The increased punishment is necessary. We need every law we can to help the officers the best we can. It's not going to bring them back. But knowing that it is a tougher penalty and possibly they'll be in prison longer. The Kansas Legislature is back in session on the second Monday of January.
