Stacey Payakoff, owner of Ranchita del Rio orchard, noted that while their yield is moderate, many neighboring orchards are seeing heavier crops, balancing out the region's overall production.

The improvement is attributed to favorable weather, with no late frosts or severe summer storms impacting the orchards. Growers remain hopeful that these positive conditions will continue, supporting both local apple picking and the broader agricultural community.

Julian orchard feels this year is a rebound year for apple harvest

The apples are back in Julian after a down year last year. We're told things are looking a lot better this year. ABC 10 News reporter Ryan Hill talked to one orchard owner about the welcome turnaround. Apple season in Julian or just the autumn season in Julian is a beautiful time of year. It's the thick of the apple season in Julian. So if you kind of watch when you start thinking about apple picking, apple pie, cider, think Labor Day to Veterans Day and somewhere in there you're gonna get some type of apple. Stacey Payakoff and her family own and operate the Ranchita del Rio orchard in Julian. So we're on the medium side this year but a lot of our other neighbors and friends they were on the heavier side so it all balances out. That balance is coming after a tough last year for Julian's apple crop. This is the worst year, the worst year anybody can remember. As we reported the crop was cut short in 2024 and this year looks to be a rebound year. I do, I believe that's a very accurate statement. Stacey tells me that they're much more optimistic about this year's harvest because there's not things like late frost and storms impacting their orchards. She tells me that can lead to more people picking apples this season. This year we didn't have any late frost, it was a mellow summer so the apples didn't grow real big but they're juicy, they stayed on the tree, we didn't have any summer heavy storms so it was a much better overall growing season. Stacey tells me it's hard to predict a growing season because of the unique area. It could snow and and blow things out again next year. But there's hope future apple growing seasons don't fall too far from the tree of this one. We hope it will continue in a good way. We almost always have some type of apples here. The last couple years we got hit hard so I do hope that for our neighbors and ourselves it's gonna be a fantastic next few years and and keep growing. Ryan Hill, ABC 10 News.
