At a pro-Palestine demonstration in Manchester, Jewish activists addressed the crowd, emphasizing that many Jewish individuals do not support the policies of the Israeli government. They highlighted the importance of distinguishing between Jewish people, Israelis, and Zionists, warning that conflating these groups can lead to increased religious hatred, including both Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.

The activists rejected the characterization of the protest as a hate march, asserting that such labels are based on false assumptions. They also expressed concern that statements by Israeli leaders claiming to speak for all Jews worldwide put Jewish communities at risk by fostering misconceptions about their responsibility for government actions in Gaza.

Despite calls in recent days from senior British politicians, from Prime Minister Keir Starmer down, joined by police chiefs of course in London and Manchester, for protests, pro-Palestine protests like this to be called off, both as a sign of respect and citing the rise of religious hatred, well this one very much of course going ahead. But worth noting that the speakers at this pro-Palestine demonstration have been Jews. They have addressed this crowd for organisations including Jewish Action for Palestine who frequently attend these pro-Palestine marches. Their message to this crowd is that the Jewish voices, not one but many, that there are many Jews who do not believe in the policies of the government in Israel and they put the rise of religious hatred both Islamophobia and anti-Semitism down to the war on Gaza. So these are not hate marches and I described in my speech why I say that is a false characterisation. It's to do with the promoted confusion between Jewish people, Israelis and Zionists. They're three completely different categories. When Netanyahu says he speaks on behalf of all Jews around the world, he's placing Jewish people everywhere in the world in danger. It gives the people the false impression that ordinary Jewish people in this country and elsewhere are in some way responsible for the horrors that the Israeli government is perpetrating in Gaza. So as this march sets off through central Manchester two days after that synagogue attack on Thursday, the message is that there are victims on both sides and the people gathered here say they are here to honour that.
