Israeli forces have increased their military operations around Gaza City and the neighboring area of Jabalia, as part of a broader offensive targeting Hamas. The escalation has led to widespread airstrikes and heavy shelling, resulting in the displacement of approximately 8,000 Palestinian civilians to other parts of Gaza City. 

The Israeli military has indicated that the evacuation of Gaza City is inevitable and has urged civilians to move south toward al-Mawassi, where plans are in place to establish water infrastructure and aid distribution sites. Aid organizations have raised concerns that this displacement could worsen the existing starvation crisis. Meanwhile, Israel has not responded to a ceasefire proposal accepted by Hamas, maintaining that all hostages must be released and Hamas must surrender before the conflict can end.

Israeli forces push deeper into Gaza City

Let's turn now to the latest on the ground in Gaza. The Israeli army continues to target the territory's biggest city as part of its latest offensive against Hamas. Journalist Blake Sifton is in Tel Aviv and he joins us now. So Blake, what is the latest at this point on the military operation that Israel is mounting on Gaza City? Good morning, Hilary. The Israeli military is intensifying its operations on the outskirts of Gaza City as well as the nearby city of Jabalia, ahead of the main offensive to seize and occupy all of Gaza City. We've seen widespread airstrikes and heavy shelling from artillery and tanks. And the United Nations says some 8,000 Palestinian civilians have fled those affected areas to other neighborhoods in the west of Gaza City. And today, an Israeli military spokesperson said that the evacuation of Gaza City is inevitable. He urged the civilian population to move south, to open areas in southern Gaza near al-Mawassi. Of course, Gaza City is home to some one million Palestinian civilians and aid organizations have said that their displacement would make the starvation crisis already underway that much worse. The Israeli military has said that they will set up water infrastructure as well as aid distribution sites and tents to accommodate those displaced from Gaza City. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Israeli security cabinet met and they reportedly did not discuss this ceasefire proposal that mediators have put forth and that Hamas agreed to last week. It calls for the release of roughly half of the Israeli, 50 Israeli hostages held in captivity in Gaza. But Israel has not responded to that proposal and they've said repeatedly that they will only accept a deal for all of the hostages and they will only end the war if Hamas effectively surrenders. Yesterday, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff said that the United States supports that position. So the Israeli government does seem intent on pushing forward with this offensive to take Gaza City.
