A woman is charged with theft by swindling after investigators found evidence that she stole thousands of dollars from the nonprofit, Project 612.

The treasurer of the Isanti County Sheriff's Foundation, Kim Nordenstrom, has been charged with theft by swindle after allegedly taking nearly $100,000 meant for Project 612, an organization supporting at-risk youth in the Twin Cities. Court documents state that Nordenstrom used the funds to pay personal debts and purchase farming equipment. 

Project 612's founder, Kelsey Marceron-Johnson, expressed disappointment but affirmed the organization's commitment to mentoring young athletes. Investigators clarified that the foundation's other board members were not involved, and the case is being handled by the Chisago County Sheriff's Office due to a conflict of interest. Nordenstrom faces two counts, with the theft by swindle charge carrying a potential penalty of up to 20 years.

The treasurer of Isanti County Sheriff's Foundation is being accused of stealing nearly six figures, and that money was meant to go to Project 612, an organization helping at-risk youth in the Twin Cities. Our SoYoung Kim spoke with the founder of Project 612 and joins us in our studios now. SoYoung, what is the victim saying now about the charges that have been filed? Kelsey Marceron-Johnson says there's a sense of sadness and betrayal, but also says this incident won't deter his team from the mission to help student-athletes on and off the court. Marceron-Johnson grew up in Minneapolis playing basketball and started Project 612 to help train and mentor young athletes. What he needed in the early stages of starting his organization was an established 501c3 organization to serve as a fiscal agent. That's when he says a friend connected him with their mom, who was the treasurer for the Isanti County Sheriff's Office Foundation. Investigators say now the treasurer, Kim Nordenstrom, is facing theft charges for allegedly swindling nearly $100,000 of grant money meant for Project 612. According to court documents, investigators say Nordenstrom used those funds to pay off her personal debt and purchase farming equipment. Johnson says this was a hard life lesson, but his mission to give back remains unchanged. The goal is to provide them with a skill that they can use to translate into the real world after school ends, after basketball ends. It's a lot of like mentoring, and we take time to, we train large groups, but like we try to individualize our services and make sure that we build people instead of just basketball players. And investigators say the foundation's two other board members were not involved. And due to a conflict of interest, investigators on this case were from the Chisago County Sheriff's Office.
