CNBC's Steve Kovach joins 'Squawk on the Street' to discuss the latest news on Apple as iPhone 17 preorders begin today.

Apple has delayed the launch of its iPhone Air in China because the device requires regulatory approval for a new type of SIM card. The company is working with local carriers and regulators to resolve the issue and aims to make the device available as soon as possible. 

Other models in the iPhone 17 lineup, which use the previous SIM card technology, are already available for purchase in China. The Chinese market remains a significant part of Apple's business, and the company is also awaiting regulatory approval to launch its AI features in the country.

iPhone Air delayed in China

Welcome back Apple hire today as pre-orders go on sale for the company's latest iPhone lineup But there could be a hiccup in China Steve Kovach with the latest. What do we know Steve? Hey there, sir There sure is a hiccup there. So let me explain what's going on in China for the iPhone air It is not available It Apple is actually postponing its launch because of regulatory approval for the new kind of SIM card that is in that phone What I'm told by Apple here is the carriers over there in China need to get Approval to use this new kind of SIM card first then Apple can get approval to sell that device Apple tells me they're working to get This out there as quickly as possible But the iPhone 17 17 pro and 17 pro max use the old kind of SIM cards. Those are for sale now So that's what's going on there China, obviously hugely important market that's been slogging so much for Apple But let's move this forward because starting next week. I'm gonna be on this program guys telling you about iPhone demand and that's because over the weekend Everybody's gonna be picking apart those lead times when you prayer pre-order an iPhone starting today It'll tell you it's gonna come in a week or two weeks or three weeks or 30 days Those lead times are a best signal of early demand for these new iPhone devices So that is the next thing investors need to watch last year was a huge disappointment We saw the demand drop from the sick from the 16 over the 15 We'll see what it looks like for the 17 and just a few days time guys So Steve what does it mean for the China timeline and and how important at this point is that is the market Oh, it's still hugely important. It's still still about a fifth of Apple's business at most and then this new phone I mean, this is the most attractive new phone in the lineup that iPhone air don't know how long it's gonna take if they can Move quickly. It's probably not gonna be a big deal. Keep in mind It's still a week from today that these phones actually will start getting into customers hands So if they can get it done in the next few days, probably not gonna be a problem But if that extends even further out, we're gonna have a problem I will also say China's holding up Apple intelligence still to the regulators They're have not allowed Apple to launch AI in the country unclear when that's gonna happen So Apple really needs those regulators to make some movement there for them to have any kind of growth out there in China guys Of course Tim's gonna join Jim tonight on mad money Steve we're gonna look forward to a much broader discussion at 6 p.m We did have that downgraded from DA Davidson yesterday where they argued the product innovation wasn't that robust?
