Investigators are examining the wreckage of a helicopter crash that killed a pilot and left his student fighting for life in Sydney’s south-west. The aircraft  was conducting low-level training exercises before it tumbled to the ground.

A helicopter crash during a training flight at Bankstown, Sydney, has resulted in the death of a flying instructor and left a 19-year-old student pilot seriously injured. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has commenced an investigation into the incident, which occurred during a circuit training exercise. 

Security footage captured the helicopter's descent, during which it struck trees and clipped a car before crashing. Local workers rescued the occupants, and the student was taken to hospital in critical condition but is now stable. Investigators are examining the cause of the crash, which reportedly began at high altitude, and are considering the impact of recent commercial development around the airfield. Bankstown Helicopters has suspended flights as the investigation continues.

Mark Ahmed watched his employees pull the two men from the wreck. They've been credited with saving the younger man's life, but sadly his instructor died at the scene. He's not moving at all. And the second one, the young man, was a bit of shaking and a lot of blood on his face. They pulled him out and they called the ambulance. The teenager is now stable after he was taken to Liverpool Hospital yesterday with critical injuries. He'd been training to become a commercial pilot at Bankstown Helicopters. The flying school where his instructor had been for a number of years. Investigators have spent the day combing the site here at Bankstown as they try to work out what went so wrong. They say that whatever triggered the crash happened at a high altitude before the chopper came tumbling down. We do know that it was conducting circuit training at the time, but how long it had been in the air for and the type of circuit training is something that we need to establish. The crash comes at a time when the area around the airfield is seeing accelerated commercial development, which has some experts worried. We've had a number of emergency returns to the airport over the years, where the aircraft have made successful returns, but those spaces now are occupied by very large industrial steel and concrete structures. There has to be a balancing between the needs of the aviation industry and the needs of the airport operators. We've made a number of recommendations and findings, even over the last year around visibility sightlines, etc. Whether or not this has any part in yesterday's outcome, it's too early for me to speculate. Bankstown Helicopters has halted flights over the weekend as the tightening at aviation community comes to terms with the events. Hannah Taylor, 10 News.
