Help starting to arrive along the stricken shores of eastern Libya. The city of Derna hardest hit. Still dressed in the mud and the horror left behind by the floodwaters. On the ground, rescue teams who've made it in are moving. Still on the hunt for survivors. We're searching against the clock, says this Spanish rescue dog handler. To try and find anyone who might still be alive. But Derna is already a city of ghosts. The living increasingly tasked with managing the dead. In just two hours, one of my colleagues counted over 200 bodies on the beach near Derna. Graves need to be mapped so that there is record of who is buried there. The enormous scale of the disaster has left people reeling. Some sought answers at Friday prayers. We lost friends, relatives and a big part of Derna, says Mohammed al-Hassani. But we appreciate those who stood with us from all over Libya. The country is divided between warring factions. Complicating efforts by aid agencies to reach those in need. The people on the ground say the tragedy has united ordinary Libyans, if not its politicians and warlords. Khaled Hamid manages a Libyan NGO. People are coming here with donations from different cities, he says. Zawiya, Misrata, Tripoli. Locals who still can are also helping. This bakery giving out loaves of bread for free. Whole families died, says this man. A city was destroyed. If Libya doesn't come together now, then when will we? The road ahead will be long in more ways than one. Margaret Evans, CBC News, London.
