Villagers in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir have begun returning home following a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after four days of intense military clashes. Many evacuees report finding their homes damaged or destroyed due to cross-border shelling. Some residents, such as Roshan Lal and others from the village of Brahari Vala, say they have lost their homes, livestock, and means of livelihood, and are calling on the Indian government for compensation and justice.

The recent clashes resulted in approximately 70 civilian deaths. According to reports, the violence began after India carried out strikes against what it described as terrorist camps in Pakistan, in retaliation for an earlier attack in Indian Kashmir that killed 26 Hindu tourists. Pakistan has denied Indian allegations of supporting militants involved in the attack.

The conflict between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed nations, centers on the disputed region of Kashmir, a territory claimed in full by both sides but divided between them. The latest hostilities are considered the worst the area has seen in over twenty years. The fighting was halted following an agreement between both countries to observe a ceasefire.

In the aftermath, some villagers have called for further retaliation, with Joginder Lal expressing support for stronger action against Pakistan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited an airbase in Punjab and reiterated the government's stance that it would continue to target terrorist hideouts if there are further attacks on India. The ceasefire was announced amid reports that US President Donald Trump and Washington played a role in bringing both parties to the negotiating table.

The four days of intense fighting between the two nuclear-armed rivals killed about 70 civilians. It was triggered after New Delhi struck what it said were terrorist camps across the border. And it came as retaliation for a deadly attack on Hindu tourists by Islamist militants in Indian Kashmir last month that killed 26 men. Pakistan denies Indian accusations of supporting militants who attack India. Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan, which both rule part of Kashmir, but claim it in full, have fought two of their three wars since independence in 1947 over the region. The latest clashes, the worst in more than two decades, were brought to an end on Saturday, and both sides agreed to a cease-fire. Back in Brahari Vala, Joginder Lal says India should take full revenge against Pakistan. Standing in front of the cracked wall of his home, he added that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi should ignore US President Donald Trump, who announced the cease-fire, saying Washington had played a role in halting the fighting. Meanwhile, Modi visited an airbase in India's border state of Punjab on Tuesday, a day after he warned Pakistan that New Delhi would target terrorist hideouts across the border again if there were new attacks on India.
