The recent violence was sparked by a deadly attack on tourists, which India attributes to Pakistan-backed militants, a claim that Pakistan denies. Both governments have publicly claimed victory after the clashes. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the ceasefire is a temporary pause in military operations and indicated that further action will depend on Pakistan’s future conduct.

The situation remains tense, with a long-standing water-sharing treaty between the two countries currently suspended. India has signaled it may adopt a tougher stance on the issue, while Pakistan faces pressing water needs. The ceasefire does not address the loss of life and trauma experienced by affected communities, and many civilians continue to live in uncertainty as unresolved issues persist.
