Hurricane Imelda has intensified, becoming the fourth hurricane of the Atlantic season. The storm is currently well-organized and is expected to pass very close to Bermuda, with the potential for a direct hit, although it is not forecast to reach Category 4 or 5 intensity like previous hurricanes this season. 

Meteorologists are also observing the Fujiwara effect, where Imelda and another storm, Umberto, are rotating around each other, steering Imelda out to sea and away from the United States. Other areas in the Atlantic and Caribbean remain quiet, but experts continue to monitor potential developments as the hurricane season progresses.

Imelda strengthens into a hurricane

Joining us right now is Accu with the lead hurricane expert Alex De Silva and Alex, we've been talking about this now for well over a week and the Fujiwara effect is, well, it's kind of a warning right now, right? Not an effect and a warning, it's occurring. Yeah, it is occurring and we've been talking about this for about a week now that the two tropical systems would essentially dance with one another and both are on the dance floor right now and they are currently dancing. You need them to be about 850 miles apart, like you said, they're about 500 miles apart or so right now, so well within that threshold and they're starting to rotate counterclockwise around each other. That's essentially what's steering Imelda out to sea and away from the United States and we're even seeing Umberto drift a little bit to the northwest right now, starting to feel those effects as well. So, a very interesting phenomenon in the Atlantic and I think the last time we saw this in the Atlantic back in 2016 with Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Nicole, so it's been quite a while. All right, now let's take a look at Umberto. Now, Umberto, as you mentioned, all of the clouds are now on the eastern side of the center of circulation, as you mentioned, and you're showing me the visible satellite picture of the center of circulation now, is away from where you see all the clouds, away from the convection, which means there should continue to be a loss of wind intensity. Yeah, there should be. Like I said, that low-level center has actually popped out and is actually drifting northwestward, I think, due to the Fujiwara, but it's also being sheared and you can see all the convection to the south and east. It's being sheared by the storm to the west, so they're getting so close to one another that they're really starting to shear each other out. But either way, Umberto will eventually make that right-hand turn and head out to sea. It's trending a little bit away from Bermuda right now, but we'll still see some wind and maybe some rain here over the next day or so. All right, now let's take a look at Imelda getting a lot better organized. Now, this became the fourth hurricane of the season, but unlike the three previous hurricanes, we're not forecasting this to go to a Category 4 or Category 5 hurricane, as every hurricane that's formed so far in the Atlantic Basin has done. Yeah, we're not expecting this one to become a major, but we still are expecting it to come very close to Bermuda here over the next couple of days as a hurricane, potentially even making a direct hit on the islands there, which is very, very uncommon. So we'll have to watch out for that, but should be making its closest pass there sometime Wednesday evening before shooting out into the North Atlantic. All right, let's take a look at the rest of the Atlantic, and that's it. That's the only game, the only storms to talk about now. You can see the clouds in the Central Atlantic right now, but they're being lifted north. And once again, the Caribbean and the Southern Gulf, Alex, very clean here right now. Not much activity at all as far as any clouds. Yeah, I mean, if you showed me this satellite picture, other than the two storms off the southeast coast, I'd probably tell you this was sometime in January or February. There is nothing going on in the Caribbean Sea right now, or even in the Southern Gulf, despite the fact that in those areas, the wind shear is actually a little bit lower, which is fairly interesting right now. But we do expect things to pick up here again in those areas as we head into the month of October here over the next couple of days. Two areas that we're watching, one in the Bay of Campeche. This one shouldn't be a threat to the United States, as it should drift to the south, regardless of development on that one. And then the other area that we're watching, another tropical wave getting ready to come off the coast of Africa. We typically still watch those at least through mid-October, so we still need to watch those tropical waves. And then from there, we look closer to the United States towards the middle and end of October, and we are highlighting an area here early to mid-October. This is going to be an area to monitor underneath the belly of the high to the northeast. This is kind of an area, this can kind of give us a signal as to areas that might be a little bit more favorable for development. So as we go towards the end of the hurricane season, like I said, we typically look a little bit closer. A lot of these waters are very much untouched, still warm, and so if anything is able to develop here, we still have to watch out. Yeah, we've been saying this now for a month. We've had yet to go anything into the Caribbean. It's hard to believe you'd go through a hurricane season with nothing in the Caribbean, so we're going to watch it.
