Tropical Storm Imelda is brushing past Florida, bringing rain, wind and dangerous surf. Leslie Hudson reports from Brevard County on worsening beach and boating conditions across the southeast U.S.

Storm Imelda, although several hundred miles offshore, is impacting Florida's eastern central coast with high surf and life-threatening rip currents. Beach patrols have issued advisories, warning people to avoid entering the water and to refrain from boating due to dangerous conditions. 

Some visitors have had to adjust their plans, with many choosing to remain onshore and prepared for any further developments. Authorities continue to stress the importance of staying close to lifeguards and following safety instructions as hazardous conditions are expected to persist.

Imelda kicks up Florida's surf

Here in Brevard County, conditions are definitely starting to get more active as distant Imelda makes its general approach towards eastern central Florida. Now remember, we know it's going to be several hundred miles offshore, but there are indirect impacts. High surf advisory is up for this area for the next several days, as well as life-threatening rip currents. That, according to the beach patrol here, they do not want folks going into the water. They want you in the shoreline here where it's safe and also not in the boats. It's very dangerous to go boating right now with those conditions. Now, we've talked to several people. Some have had to alter their plans. We talked to one couple that dealt with the hurricanes on the west side of Florida last year. They're here on the east side trying to make the best of their vacation, and here's what they had to say. Make sure we had, you know, camp boots, candles, all the necessities that are needed, but yeah, we're happy that they're staying out in the Atlantic. Now, beach patrol says those conditions, again, will stay very, very dangerous along these area waters through the next two days or so, and if you want to come take video, take pictures, maybe even venture into the water, they want to make sure and stress that you're swimming near those lifeguards so they can tell if you're in danger.
