U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is intensifying its recruitment and training programs to manage increased responsibilities resulting from the administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. The agency has received over 100,000 applications since the start of the Trump administration and is focusing on hiring individuals with a desire to serve in homeland security roles.

To attract more candidates, ICE has introduced a $50,000 signing bonus and lowered the minimum age requirement for applicants from 21 to 18. Training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia includes rigorous physical and mental preparation. The agency is also equipping recruits with new gear funded by recent federal legislation. According to the Pew Research Center, the U.S. immigrant population is currently declining for the first time in over 50 years.

What are you looking for when you're hiring ICE officers, both for men and women who want to sign up? You know, right now we're looking for people that want to come out here, want to defend the homeland. Lyons says the agency has received more than 100,000 applications just since the start of the Trump administration. For a job he says is simple, keeping Americans safe. We're having a lot of current active law enforcement officers, sheriffs, deputies, state troopers, they want to come and be a part of the ICE family. When they come out of here, they are top-notch law enforcement officers. The physical training is intense, with recruits hitting the obstacle course in 100-degree heat as trainers focus on prepping their teams physically and mentally. About four in 10 applicants have military or law enforcement experience. The agency's seen more people sign up after offering a $50,000 signing bonus and dropping the minimum age requirement to 18 from 21. ICE is also making use of new equipment like magazine holders and gun belts, some which was paid for with funding from President Trump's big, beautiful bill. To get the officers and new officers to come in, to give them everything that they need to be successful, whatever tool that might be.
