As July comes to an end, there are no tropical storms in the Atlantic, but the eastern Pacific is busy.

Florida

Hurricane Iona, a powerful storm with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour, is currently moving westward well south of Hawaii. Accompanying Iona is Tropical Storm Kilae, a weaker system also tracking west, while increased trade winds are being observed in the region due to strong pressure systems.

In the Atlantic, conditions remain relatively calm, with strong wind shear preventing tropical waves from developing further west. However, meteorologists are monitoring a frontal boundary off the coast for limited chances of development in the coming days.

Hurricane swirls in the Pacific, Atlantic calm for now

We're going to begin our tropical update actually in the Pacific because there is some more noise out this way as the Atlantic's temporarily quiet, but not for too long. Here's Hawaii. In south of Hawaii we have Hurricane Iona. This is a pretty powerful storm, a max sustained wind of 125 miles per hour. This is indeed a major hurricane moving west, well removed from Hawaii, staying way to the south with a pretty steady westerly motion. And then right behind that, so while we have Hurricane Iona just to the west, here's Tropical Storm Kilae there just off to the east. And that's also moving west right on its heels, a far weaker storm. But we have strong low pressure south of Hawaii and high pressure way to the northeast. There is an increase in the trade winds as you have the clockwise flow around a high, counterclockwise flow around both of these storms to the south. So again, increasing the trade winds. Now there was a far more dramatic and dynamic contrast that we experienced two years ago when we had those massive Maui County wildfires. That was a much stronger ridge closer to the north, but still there will be an increase in some fire danger even though it's not going to be as volatile as we experienced back then. We also have other prospects, three other zones that we're watching, southwest of Mexico and also over the open water. So a lot of traffic and there will be more development to come in the Pacific. Taking you to the Atlantic, we're watching a few different areas. Stronger tropical waves are making more progress off the west coast of Africa into the main development region. Strong shear though east of the Caribbean will prevent any of them from making it too far west. But a little closer to home, there's a front that's going to deposit itself off the coast. We need to keep an eye out for that area. There's a little bit of a weakness in the shear here. Now the front's going to push through with some extra shear, but eventually there will be a little break in the shear. So limited chance for development, a little closer to home between Saturday and the middle of next week.
