The timeline for hurricane preparedness varies depending on where a storm forms in the Atlantic. Storms that develop near the Gulf or southwest Atlantic may allow only a day or two for preparation, while those forming farther east, such as near the Cabo Verde Islands, can provide up to two weeks' notice.

Residents are advised to prepare early in the season by assembling emergency kits, checking insurance, and making a hurricane plan. As a storm approaches, it's important to review supplies, secure cash and fuel, and monitor local updates for evacuation or shelter information. Final preparations should include property protection and keeping electronics charged.

Hurricane preparedness timeline

Mhm. What is the time of year? When we talk about hurricane season, we're tracking a lot of waves and different activity across the Atlantic. And one thing you have to remember is sometimes these seem like they're so distant storms, but we do have generally a timeline here as things progress as to how many days you have to prepare. So obviously, if it forms near the gulf or near the southwest Atlantic, you really only have maybe a day or two to prepare. But the farther out it is, the farther we're tracking it, you can have upwards of a week to prepare. And when it's near the Cabo Verde Islands, we're talking about almost two weeks to prepare for a storm system. So that's how we time things out across the Atlantic. What does that mean for us? Well, at the start of hurricane season, you should always make sure that you are prepared. With that, you want to create an emergency supply kit. Make sure you're checking your insurance. All your documents are together and create that hurricane plan. Then, as things progress and maybe you start to realize that you have most of these things together, maybe you're missing a few items or you need to wait until that last minute. You want to make sure that you are one week to go ready by checking the forecast frequently. Also, at that point in time, it's a good idea to get your cash and get your gas tanks full. Make sure that you have guests for your generator, for example, and start that up as well to ensure that it does work. Review those hurricane supplies. Check any last minute supplies that you may need. And of course, again, be ready for the storm. Continue to monitor the forecast through one to three days to go and also check your county and city sites to get additional information for what's specific to your area, whether that's shelter and structures or even evacuation structures. At that point, you can evacuate if you need to, but also make sure that your property is fully ready to go and shut it up as you keep your electronics fully charged.
