Hundreds of mourners assembled in Sydney to pay their respects to the victims of the recent mass shooting that claimed 15 lives. The first funeral was held for Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who had helped organize the Hanukkah gathering where the attack occurred, and whose youngest child was born just weeks before the tragedy.

The funeral for 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim, was also scheduled, with her father recounting his efforts to save her during the attack. Police have charged the 24-year-old surviving gunman with 15 counts of murder and are investigating his and his father's recent travels to the Philippines for possible links to terror group training.

The first funeral was for Rabbi Eli Schlanger, whose body arrived at the synagogue just a few blocks from where the massacre took place, an outpouring of grief for the father of five, whose youngest was born just seven weeks ago. The funeral of 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim, will take place today. Her father described trying desperately to get his daughter to safety. I was holding her and I was like, calm down, please, please, please. I was trying to pull her out, but the shooting would just not stop. More than a dozen people are still being treated in hospital. Meantime, police have charged the 24-year-old surviving gunman with 15 counts of murder and dozens of other charges. Authorities are tracing his and his father's recent movements to the Philippines to investigate whether they received training from terror groups there.
