That's the tariff with interest and a fine. The investigation comes down to paperwork that was once a routine task, now a high-risk activity. If you get them wrong, you need to be able to prove that it was merely administrational oversight and that there was nothing malicious behind the mistake. That's something that's new in the past few months. Historically, getting paperwork wrong was looked at as an administrative error. A company could face a penalty, but there was no tariff to enforce. Penalties continue at nearly the same rate year over year, but the cost to companies is on the rise. Mistakes are more dangerous now than they were in the past. Tariffs have led to layoffs at this Ontario auto parts plant, but the paperwork required for cross-border shipping, it's led to two new hires. Not only is the money, the tension, the stress it creates. Back at the warehouse between skids, they take calls seeking clarity on complex tariff classifications. I can find something wrong one day and it's worth like, I don't know, $1,000 in extra duty. But then the next day I get back $2,000 because the law is changing.
