Hurricanes are becoming more frequent and more destructive. One company, Deltec Homes, is offering a solution by building round, aerodynamic, hurricane-resistant houses. The director of engineering breaks down how they do it.

A company in Asheville, North Carolina, has developed round homes that are specifically engineered to resist hurricane-force winds. The homes, produced by DelTec, feature reinforced windows, extra-thick sheathing, and a circular design that helps distribute wind pressure more evenly compared to traditional rectangular houses. DelTec reports a 99% success rate for their homes against hurricanes, with structures designed to withstand winds up to 190 miles per hour.

The circular architecture, inspired by both modern engineering and historical designs, allows for more connected support points and reduces the force of wind on any single wall. While DelTec is a prominent builder, other options like monolithic domes also offer weather-resistant features. Despite their strength, the company emphasizes that no home is entirely hurricane-proof, but these designs offer significant resistance.

How these round homes survive hurricanes

So they actually test these windows and shoot two by fours at them like a missile right at the window. Those windows will crack and that's fine, but the intent is for those windows not to implode into the structure and allow that wind intrusion into the home. We've built over 5,000 homes. We have a 99% success rate against hurricanes. Hurricanes are becoming more extreme and more likely. More than 33 million homes in the U.S. are at quote moderate or greater risk of taking damage from hurricane-force winds. So we need to rethink how we approach housing in high-risk areas. One solution has come from a company called DelTec with their round, hurricane-resistant homes. Founded in 1968, DelTec set out with a different goal in mind. The resort industry was looking for a unique space for their customers. We started noticing that our homes were really resistant to winds. Now the homes are built to spec here in Asheville, North Carolina before being shipped around the world to be assembled on site. Yeah, we can get cooking pretty good. We can put two houses through at a one time. DelTec says they use extra-thick sheathing, machine-tested wood, weather barriers. This is to prevent your moisture from getting into the house. But the company says what makes their round homes so special is their natural resilience to wind. So a rectangular home, you usually have like a long, flat wall. All that wind is just smashing up against that flat wall and can't go anywhere. And it's putting a lot of force onto the home. You know, our house is being round. You know, you can kind of vision it like if you had a soda can and you were to blow air across that soda can. It would curve around the home and it's not pushing all that force onto the home. Category 5 hurricane, for example, is I think over 156 miles per hour. We're designing our homes for up to 190 miles per hour. And that's a three second gust. So keeping the roof on is obviously your job number one, right? So all the trusses meet at that radial center, kind of like spokes on a wheel. Their circular design creates more connected support points, which helps spread the stress of wind forces more evenly. Deltek claims their roofs are nearly three times more wind resistant than rectangular roofs. We build every house for its site conditions. It's all just kind of like Lego pieces, putting together different components to create what you'd need. Homes that are at risk of flooding, for example, can be elevated. From customization to potential savings on insurance and energy costs, buyers have a lot to consider, including the price of the home itself. Deltek's website lists homes from $200,000 to over $2 million. And Deltek isn't the only option for a weather resistant or round home. Monolithic domes are known for their unique and weather resistant concrete design, while circular architecture is found throughout history and dates back to the Bronze Age. Even though our homes are very strong, there's no hurricane proof home. Our homes are hurricane resistant and anything can happen with Mother Nature.
