The process has become more dangerous, with migrants entering deep water to board vessels and some unable to make it onto the boats. Smugglers have shifted boarding operations from the beach to the water, increasing the risks. Some migrants report making multiple attempts before successfully reaching the UK.

How immigrants try to cross the Channel from France to the UK

It is early morning on this beach at Gravelines, situated between Calais and Dunkirk in northern France. These migrants are trying their luck to cross the English Channel and reach the UK, even taking their children with them. A small inflatable boat soon approaches. Migrants are already on board. The ones wanting to join them must enter the water. It's a condition for escaping arrest. French police are present, on land and in the air. But they have been instructed not to intervene, to avoid causing panic. The smugglers have changed their methods accordingly. Boarding no longer takes place on the beach, but at sea. And that is even more dangerous. There is a baby here among the passengers. The baby is passed from hand to hand until it reaches the middle of the boat. The vessel is filling up with hopeful migrants. The last ones trying to get on board have water up to their necks. Not all of them make it. Exhausted and disappointed, they return to shore. The crossing, or at least the attempt, will have to wait for another day. Some migrants say they have tried a dozen times before finally reaching their goal, the English coast and the United Kingdom.
