The Summerhill Village project, which cost $17.3 million, features 49 one- and two-bedroom homes and is designed to support women and their families, with a particular focus on those over 55.

This initiative responds to the growing issue of homelessness among older women in Victoria, where over 1,000 women moved into social housing in the past year. The development aims to provide residents with dignity, privacy, and accessibility, while fostering a sense of community and encouraging intergenerational connections.

Michelle, Lynette and Josephine are all new neighbours, living in one of Melbourne's newest social housing buildings. We've got great neighbours. We just feel really at home. Great neighbours. The women are among 60 people who have moved into the Summerhill village in the heart of Footscray in Melbourne's west. Even though you are sort of living in close confinement of each other, you're still individual, like you can close your door. The development includes 49 one- and two-bedroom homes. $17.3 million has gone into this particular project, and this is part of the investment that we're making all over the state. This particular development is aimed at supporting women and their families. We're really trying to focus on an intergenerational aspect as well, and that's what our research told us. We interviewed lots of old women and they said they'd love to see a couple of kids running around. Women over 55 is one of the fastest-growing groups of homelessness in Victoria, with more than 1,000 women moving into social housing last year.
