He asked for money to buy snacks to treat his friends. As the cheerful chat ended, she says she felt uneasy, without knowing why. At 4pm, my third child said, mum, Mufi's school collapsed. I didn't believe it at first, because I'd just got off a call with Mufi. Look, look, here, it's Mufi's school. I realised, and after waiting for his father to come home, we rushed there to check whether it was true. Apparently, it was. The school collapsed during afternoon prayers on Monday. At least nine were killed, with dozens more students and workers strapped in the rubble. Over 50 people, including Alfian, remain unaccounted for, though officials have not declared him dead. Jayanti was among the scores of parents anxiously awaiting news of their children. Authorities said the school collapsed because its foundation could not support ongoing construction work on the upper floors. Hamida Sotaji, Jayanti's sister, questions the safety of such construction practices. From what I heard, student involvement in construction of buildings of similar schools is common and normalised. However, the construction has to be executed properly. Students would only be helping, perhaps with carrying cement, but construction should have been calculated in more detail. I don't know whether this was done well. It was done in great detail, but I don't know what happened. Four days on, rescue teams kept searching on Friday, even though no vital signs were detected the day before, when they used sensors and called the victims' names. Now, Jayanti's hope is dimming that emergency workers will find her son alive. Now it seems impossible. I accept everything. Allah took him in the best manner possible. And God be willing, heaven will be his place. I accept everything.
