Hundreds of police swarmed Melbourne's CBD as four rival protest groups rallied in the streets. Officers stopped demonstrators from reaching each other for most of the day, but there were some clashes.

Several rival protest groups assembled in Melbourne, prompting police to establish barriers and maintain separation between the groups. The rallies followed recent violent clashes in the city connected to an anti-immigration march attended by neo-Nazi participants. 

While most of the demonstrations remained peaceful, a few isolated incidents occurred after the main marches, including the use of capsicum spray by police. Authorities had prepared for potential violence by designating the central business district as a special area, granting police extra powers. Businesses temporarily closed as a precaution, and police maintained a visible presence throughout the city.

The protests come two weeks after violent clashes on Melbourne's streets as part of the anti-immigration March for Australia, attended by prominent neo-Nazis, that ended with an attack on camp sovereignty. Today, both sides claimed the rallies would be peaceful, and for the most part, they were. A few breakout groups breaching the peace after the main marches had completed, resulting in at least one man being capsicum sprayed. The four protest groups included the Australia Unites Against Government Corruption rally, coupled with the anti-immigration Save Australia group, both converged on the front steps of parliament. Those protestors were countered by a rally against racism, and another called Sovereignty Never Seeded. It's the first time I've been out to a march or a protest, and I'm really proud of the mob that's turned up. I just really want to counter the message of hate that's been around in the community. We all should be able to be as one, you know, it doesn't matter what colour we are. In anticipation of violence, the entire CBD has become a designated area, giving police additional powers to stop and search, and ask protestors to remove any face masks. The level of violence anticipated never came, but the city was prepared. Shops closed their doors as protestors passed, police lining department stores to prevent any entry, officers on foot, horseback and bike working hard to protect. And in a matter of hours, they'll do it again. The city's 100th pro-Palestine rally planned for tomorrow. Steph Warmgartel, 10 News.
